Thick Hair in The Summer: The Products That Actually Work (Luxury + Dupes)
If you have thick hair, summer isn’t effortless; it’s maintenance.
Let’s be honest. The second that 80-degree weather comes, it isn’t much of cupcakes-and-rainbows for the girls with thick, long hair. Your hair goes from manageable to overwhelming within seconds. It starts sticking to your neck, it expands when you step outside, and somehow it feels both dry and greasy at the same time... And the worst part? Most summer hair advice is all about “lightweight this,” and “volume that,” when thick hair already has enough going on.
As a bridal makeup artist, I have worked with many clients, especially women of South Asian culture who have naturally thick, dense hair. And if there is one thing I’ve learned is this: thick hair in the summer is not “easy” hair. It’s hair that needs the right balance.
Between humid outdoor ceremonies, long wedding days, and heavy styling, I’ve seen exactly what happens when thick hair is not prepped properly. It expands, it frizzes, it gets heavy at the roots and dry at the ends, and suddenly the whole look feels off.
This is not about adding volume; my clients have enough of that. It is time for the thick-haired girls to enjoy their hair in the summertime just like everyone else. This is about control; keeping hair smooth, soft, and polished in the heat without piling so many products, which makes everything worse.
Because if your hair is out of control this summer, it is not your hair. It is the products.
Your Summer Hair Philosophy
When I prep my bridal clients, the ones with thick, textured hair, I follow one rule: Thick hair doesn’t need more product; it needs smarter product.
The goal is not to make the hair look flat or lifeless. It is to create movement and shape. Hair that stays throughout the long days in the heat.
That means:
Lightweight layers instead of heavy buildup
Products that absorb, not sit on the hair
Focusing on control instead of forcing sleekness
Your routine should feel light. If it feels heavy, it doesn’t belong to your summer routine.
Your Simple Summer Hair Routine
When I am advising clients, mainly brides who need their hair to last all day, I always simplify their routine. Start with a wash using a detox shampoo to remove buildup. Condition only your mid-lengths and ends. On damp hair, apply your leave-in spray. This is your base. Follow with a humidity serum to protect your style before stepping outside. From there, only add what you need. If your hair feels puffy, use a smoothing serum. If your ends feel dry, use a tiny amount of oil. If you’re using more than three products at once, you’re doing too much.
Products That Actually Work
These are the exact hair products I am taking with me everywhere this summer, for my clients and myself!
Step 1: Clarify + Reset (Your Weekly Essential)
One thing I always stress to my clients: clean hair performs better. Before any bridal event in the summer, I make sure the hair is fully cleansed so that the products can work properly. OUAI Detox Shampoo is one of my go-to recommendations for removing buildup without stripping the hair. Another great option is Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal Shampoo which detoxes the scalp and keeps everything feeling fresh. If your hair feels heavy, it’s not dry; it’s holding onto buildup.
Step 2: Lightweight Leave-In (Your Base Layer)
Every good hairstylist starts with a good prep. This is the most important part of the whole routine; if this gets messed up, everything after it will be harder. A mist-based leave-in conditioner is essential for thick hair because it detangles and softens without weighing the hair down. I’ve been using the OUAI Leave-In Conditioner on clients who want a polished, soft finish without heaviness. It disappears into the hair and gives that clean, controlled feel. For a more affordable option, Hairitage Light As A Feather Leave-In Conditioner does the same job. It is lightweight and perfect for everyday use! This step is non-negotiable. If your leave-in feels like a cream, it's already too heavy.
Step 3: Humidity Defense
Before outdoor bridal events, I always use a humidity-protecting product because once the hair expands, there is no reversing it without restyling it (meaning starting all over). The product Kerastase Premiere Serum Filler Fondamental creates a smooth, polished barrier against moisture in the air. If you are looking for something less on the pricier side, Ion Humidity Defying Serum works incredibly well. It is lightweight, oil-free, and keeps hair from puffing up the second you step outside. Humidity is not something you fix; it's something you prevent.
Step 4: Smoothing Bulk
Even with good prep, there are some days your hair will not listen and it will want to expand. That is where smoothing serums come in handy. For the thicker texture type, I use Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum to control bulk and help the hair lie more naturally without stiffness. A product that has a similar effect is the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum which gives the same outcome and is about the same price! These types of products are something you do not need every day. It is just for the days your hair has a mind of its own.
Step 5: Lightweight Oil (only on ends)
When I am finishing any look, brides or myself, I always finish it off with some oil on the ends. This helps with shine and breakage. Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil is great because it’s lightweight and glossy without looking greasy and feeling heavy. For a more budget-friendly option that gives the same effect, Herbal Essences Lightweight Hair Oil works just as well for smoothing the ends.
Bonus: The Lazy Day Product
Not every day is a full routine, and it doesn't have to be. For quick styling, I love using multi-use products that smooth, soften, and protect all at once.
Amika Frizz Me Not Anti-Frizz Treatment is a great high-end option that gives a clean, controlled finish. For a dupe, L’Oreal Elvive Dream Lengths Frizz Killer Serum does the same thing at a lower price point. These are perfect for days when you want your hair to look put together without overthinking it.
Common Mistakes Thick Hair Girls Make
After working with so many clients, I’ve realized the issue usually isn’t what people are using; it’s how they’re using it. One of the biggest mistakes is applying products to soaking wet hair and expecting results. Thick hair holds water longer, which means your products get diluted and don’t absorb properly. Slightly damp hair (not dripping) is where your routine actually starts working.
Another mistake is not to section your hair. This is huge. With thick hair, if you’re just spraying or applying product on the surface, the underneath layers are completely untouched. That’s why the top might look smooth, but the bottom frizzes or feels dry halfway through the day. Over-brushing is another issue I see constantly, especially in humid weather. The more you brush thick hair, the more you separate the strands, which creates expansion instead of smoothness. What feels like “controlling” is making your hair bigger. A mistake that gets overlooked? Ignoring your haircut. If your hair is all one length or too blunt, it will naturally form that heavy, triangular shape in the summer. No product can fully fix that. Shape matters just as much as products. And finally, styling your hair too tightly when it’s already heavy. Tight ponytails or buns in heat can make your roots flatten faster and feel oilier sooner.
Thick hair isn’t difficult; it just requires more intention in how you handle it. Working with thick hair, especially in bridal settings, has taught me that the goal isn’t to change your hair, it’s to understand it. Thick hair is beautiful, full, and versatile. But in the summer, it needs a different approach. Heat, humidity, and long days don’t mean your hair has to feel overwhelming; they just mean your routine must work a little smarter. Lighter products. Less layering. Smarter choices. Most importantly, consistency. The way you prep your hair matters just as much as the products you use. When your foundation is right, everything else becomes easier. Your styling, your maintenance, and how your hair holds throughout the day.
You don’t need to fight your hair to make it look good; you need to give it what it actually needs. This summer, we’re not fighting our hair; we’re finally understanding it. To stay updated on all things beauty and business, follow me on Tiktok and Instagram and check out my ShopMy.
