The In-Between Season: Building a Wardrobe for Winter-to-Spring Days

Finally, here in New York, we are starting to thaw out for the season. But every East Coaster knows, it’s that time of year when the wardrobe and the weather seem to be having completely different conversations.

One morning I wake up to sunshine streaming through the windows and I’m convinced spring has finally arrived. I reach for lighter layers, something optimistic, something airy. I step outside in a light denim jacket and am almost too warm. Then by evening, there’s a winter weather advisory alert on my phone.

This in-between season always left me not knowing what to reach for. I could never plan outfits ahead, and my wardrobe looked disastrous. I used to hate dressing for this time because I never seemed to reach for the right items and would end up hating my outfit or feeling uncomfortable because I wasn’t dressed for the right weather. Over time, though, I’ve realized the solution is in embracing the season and reaching for the items we sometimes overlook.  Pieces that layer effortlessly, make a statement, and make you feel pulled together no matter what the temperature decides to do.

These are the pieces I rely on every year during that unpredictable stretch between winter and spring. Investing in these pieces made it so I didn’t have to choose between style or comfort – I could easily decide on both, just like the weather.

1. Cardigan Sets: Effortless, Polished, and Practical

If there’s one piece I reach for again and again during this season, it’s a cardigan set.

There’s something inherently polished about the combination of a fitted knit top paired with its matching cardigan. Worn together, it feels thoughtful and elegant. Worn separately, it becomes incredibly versatile.

On colder mornings, I button the cardigan fully and layer it under a trench or coat. When the afternoon warms up, the cardigan drapes casually over my shoulders or ties loosely around my waist. They are buildable and take minimal effort, so you look put together despite needing to remove layers or build them back up again. They provide structure without sacrificing comfort.

2. Lightweight Trench Jackets: The Transitional Essential

No piece captures the spirit of early spring quite like a lightweight trench. I love reaching for one of these because it’s the type of jacket that instantly elevates even the simplest outfit. Throw one over denim and a sweater, and suddenly the whole look feels intentional. A trench works beautifully in that temperature sweet spot where a heavy coat feels like too much, but leaving the house without a jacket still feels a little bit like a risk. We’ve all been there, we saw the forecast was 60 degrees, saw the sunshine through the window, and stepped out in just a sweater only to be seriously disturbed when the windchill reminds us that it's still March in NY.

That’s when a trench is the perfect layer to add. I like to wear mine loosely belted, sleeves slightly pushed up, with soft layers underneath. It adds movement and dimension without overwhelming the outfit. It’s the chicest addition to any spring look and the perfect defense against those breezy, unpredictable spring winds.

3. Elevated Long Sleeves: Your Everyday Foundation

During transitional seasons, the pieces closest to your skin matter most. Any long sleeve will work, but this is the time to get a bit more fun and make more of a statement with your long sleeve tops.

Elevated long sleeve tops are the backbone of my wardrobe this time of year. Be it a soft knit, a ribbed texture, slightly structured silhouettes, interesting necklines – I love those pieces that feel more refined than a basic tee but are just as easy to style and most importantly: to layer.

These tops work under everything: sweater vests, cardigans, ponchos, or lightweight jackets. They’re warm enough for cool mornings but breathable enough to last through the day. When you invest in quality basics, the rest of your outfit becomes much easier to build.

4. Layerable Dresses: The Most Underrated Transitional Piece

For years I didn’t even reach for my dresses until at least June. But now that I've become more intentional with my wardrobe, I consider them one of the smartest pieces to wear between seasons. The key is choosing dresses that are layerable

A simple knit or cotton dress can be styled in countless ways: with a cardigan, under a sweater vest, paired with a trench, or layered with a poncho for texture. During this season, I love a maxi or a longer midi dress. It gives that extra protection on the legs, but is still light and fun for those sunny, 60-degree days.

Footwear is especially important when choosing a dress. Leather booties make it feel winter-appropriate, while loafers or flats give it that effortless early spring energy. Layerable dresses offer something that transitional wardrobes often lack and switch it up from the easy jeans and jacket combo we tend to reach for (and get bored of) during this time.

5. Statement Sneakers: Casual, but Intentional

The simple pleasure of wearing a sneaker after months of winter boots is not to be underestimated. If you’re anything like me, I try to get outside as much as possible on those warm and sunny days. I don’t need a boot, but it’s too cold to go without socks quite yet. That’s where we can get creative with our comfort wear.

This doesn’t mean being lazy with our outfits, it just means investing in sneakers that make a statement and won’t jeopardize the integrity of our outfit. Think bold colors, leather pairs, unique patterns, or slightly chunky silhouettes.

They add personality to otherwise classic outfits. Sneakers paired with trench coats, dresses, or tailored pieces create that perfect balance between polished and relaxed. It’s the kind of styling that feels modern without trying too hard.

And practically speaking, they’re ideal for unpredictable spring weather.

6. Loafers: Quiet Sophistication

Loafers are one of those shoes that somehow manage to feel both timeless and current. They’re structured enough to make an outfit feel polished, yet comfortable enough for everyday wear. During the winter-to-spring transition, they bridge the gap beautifully between heavy boots and delicate sandals. This is one of those items you want readily available during this time, as they really do become a staple.

I especially love pairing loafers with light wash denim, flowy skirts, or simple dresses. The contrast between tailored footwear and softer fabrics creates a look that feels balanced and thoughtful – and it’s a fun switch up from the heaviness of the winter wardrobe we’ve been wearing for months now.

7. Leather Booties: Winter’s Last Stand

Even as spring approaches, there are still plenty of days when warmth matters. That’s where leather booties come in. They’re the perfect compromise between heavy winter boots and lighter spring footwear. Personally, I like to reach for the ones with a bit of a higher heel that I tend to avoid during the icy months.

A leather bootie can work with dresses, denim, skirts, or trousers, making them a staple since they are so versatile. They can also dress up a lightweight t-shirt, or a simple long sleeve. They keep outfits grounded but effortlessly elegant, while still feeling seasonally appropriate.

I prefer more sleek silhouettes, nothing overly bulk. A pointed toe, a neutral color, they just transition so easily into spring styling without compromising comfort on those days that aren’t cold but aren’t quite warm either.

8. Elevated Flats: The First Hint of Spring

Flats are still having a major moment, and for good reason. They are one of the most versatile items you can keep in your closet, especially during this time of year. It won’t be long until it almost seems too hot for them, so I really like to embrace this time while I can. That being said – you know I’m not taking the basic approach.

Enter elevated flats. You can transform a simple outfit with these styles. I’m talking about pointed silhouettes, maybe with a buckle or two, or maybe a silky style with a ribbon add-on, or mesh styles in vibrant colors. There are so many ways you can make a statement with a flat and do so comfortably.

They pair perfectly with any wardrobe staple. Easy to dress up or dress down and won’t be too much if you have to add on some layers in other areas of the outfit when the evening starts to chill. After months of boots, they instantly make an outfit feel lighter.

9. Ponchos: The Statement Layer

Ponchos are one of my favorite pieces for this unpredictable season because they offer warmth without the heaviness of a full coat while also adding an interesting element to the overall look. They add texture and movement to an outfit in a way traditional jackets often don’t, and they work inside just as well as they do outside.

I like styling ponchos over a cashmere long sleeve or a cotton tee on those sunnier days, letting the layers underneath peek through. Paired with slim denim or tailored trousers, they create a beautifully balanced silhouette.

They feel relaxed yet dramatic, and I can’t stress this enough: they are versatile. That’s the key to this season’s wardrobe. Ponchos are perfect for days when the weather calls for extra warmth, but you still want to look intentional.

10. Sweater Vests: Layering, Perfected

Few pieces embody transitional style quite like the sweater vest. It’s warm, but not too warm. Structured, but still relaxed. Classic, but can be an elevated modern when done right.

Sweater vests are the perfect layering piece. Easily removable if it gets too warm but are breathable and comforting enough to work for most late winter/early spring days. They add dimension and interest to simple outfits while keeping you comfortable in fluctuating temperatures. They make layering feel effortless rather than bulky. Keep a couple of these in your wardrobe during this time and you really won’t have to work hard for the perfect fit.

11. Button Downs: The Quiet Power Piece

Being a CEO, if I had to choose one item that works in every season, it would be a great button down. During this annoying in-between period though, they become especially valuable.

Worn alone, they’re crisp and polished. Layered under sweater vests or ponchos, they add structure and contrast. Styled open over dresses or knits, they take on a relaxed, effortless feel. A good button down acts like a wardrobe anchor and can take an outfit from one vibe to an entirely different one depending on your styling. It’s something that works for layering up and dressing down - grounding every outfit with a sense of intentional simplicity.

12. Lightweight Sweaters: The Everyday Comfort Layer

Of course, no in-between wardrobe is complete without lightweight sweaters. They’re warm enough for chilly mornings but breathable enough for warmer afternoons. They are the best for layering, especially when you layer over a t-shirt that can work if the day gets too warm. Tie it loosely over your waist or your shoulders and the outfit remains chic even when shedding layers.

I prefer softer silhouettes during this time of year. Nothing too heavy, nothing too structured. The goal during this season is flexibility. Pieces that move with the day rather than fighting against it.

Honorable Mentions: The Styling Pieces That Pull Everything Together

While the core wardrobe pieces do most of the work, the right supporting pieces can completely transform an outfit. Here are some items I like to style these staple pieces with to last me with new and different looks even while using some of the same key items.

Head Scarves

Head scarves are one of the most underrated accessories. They add a hint of vintage charm while also being surprisingly practical on breezy spring days. Keep your ears warm and hair in place on windy days, without risking hat hair.

Light Wash Denim

Nothing says “spring is coming” quite like light wash denim. After months of darker winter tones, lighter denim instantly brightens an outfit. Paired with sweater vests, trench coats, button downs, or loafers, it creates that relaxed yet elevated aesthetic that defines transitional style.

Flowy Maxi Skirts

Finally, there’s the flowy maxi skirt. It’s one of my favorite pieces for bridging seasons because it works with almost everything. Paired with lightweight sweaters, cardigan sets, button downs, or even ponchos, it brings movement and softness to layered outfits. And when styled with sneakers or loafers, it achieves that perfect balance between comfort and elegance. It allows us to embrace those moments of warmth but still layer up with a pair of tights underneath on those days where winter wants to make itself known again. Plus, they are perfect with a leather bootie.

Final Thoughts for the Final Days of Winter

Dressing for the space between winter and spring can feel confusing at first. The weather changes daily, the temperatures fluctuate, and sometimes it feels like you’re just waiting out these days until it’s warm enough to dress cute again. But with a bit of preparation, I’ve learned that transitional style isn’t about chasing the forecast, it’s about building a wardrobe that adapts.

With thoughtful layers, versatile pieces, and a few elevated basics, getting dressed becomes less about guessing and more about enjoying the process. It’s about perspective, but consider this: It’s a time of experimentation, of layering, of rediscovering pieces you haven’t worn in months. A reminder that sometimes the most interesting outfits happen in the in-between moments.
